After a few weeks of hard thinking and doing very little art apart from life sessions I have concluded its time for a change of pace/direction/approach. I've been painting at life sessions for about 18 months on and off and have decided this is my last one for a while. My plan is to just concentrate on the drawing at life and do some more carefully considered paintings of other subjects both from life and reference materials. Not having time to think can be a good thing but I'd like to explore and experiment more with brushwork and painting techniques for a while. I also hope to get around to painting plein air, I just need to establish a routine before the summer is over.
So as a last figure painting for the foreseeable this is pretty big, about A1. It was great fun painting with a giant brush and I enjoyed the high key colours which I had premixed but I am looking forward to having a bit more time to think about design and composition and not worry about colour so much.
I will be using my Pan Pastels drawing set along with a few conte and sanguine sticks and of course charcoal. I find it worthwhile to use Pan Pastels on decent quality paper and even for sketches it helps using something with a bit of tooth or its too much of a battle. My absolute favourite is Rives BFK although it is relatively expensive and I will experiment with other papers too.
