Ladies in recline

The last three weeks we have had three different lovely ladies posing for us.  I quite liked how this one came out, less is more as far as some of the details are concerned and I am trying to suggest rather than render everything.

Pastel and Conte on Black Paper

Approx 1 hour

Here I used Clairfontaine Pastelmat which was more of a challenge in the time as you cant move the pastel around on the paper so easily and also I dont carry many soft pastels with me so struggled with colours, conte and hard pastels really dont work so well.  Its a bit overworked and not as interesting but I'll see how it goes experimenting with different papers for a while longer.

For last nights session I chose Sienna pastelmat.  The mid-tone really threw me, I still didnt have the right colours and I am getting smaller and more fiddly - back to black and boldness again next week.

Getting back in the swing now

Alex is a firm favourite of the Sunday group, a very professional model with elegance and grace.

Pastel and Conte on Grey paper

Although this looks the same this is a tan paper which worked really well, I did some other quick poses on the same paper which I was pleased with but left it behind.  It will be interesting so see what I think of them in a months time

This was a bit of a boring pose on the face of it so I went for it with the colour, building the layers and just playing and having fun.

The Tuesday night model was a wonderful muscular guy who could really hold the upright poses.  He commented that we were kind letting him sit down for the long pose - but we always do as there is nothing worse than thinking your model is suffering.  A great night!

Short poses, 5 - 7 mins
Long pose, about an hour

I am comfortable doing the day poses on lighter paper and the night poses on dark - that seems to be a good way of working right now.
